He is first and foremost—at everything. A man who’s made his own way in the world through ruthless cunning and sheer force of will. A strong and imposing Scot who can turn on the charm but does not suffer fools. His title: Lord Chief Justice of the High Court. His name: Cassius Gerard Ramsay. His mission: To investigate the goings-on at London’s most notorious gaming hell, owned and operated by one of the most intriguing and desirable women he’s ever met.

Cecelia Teague was an orphan facing a rather dire future—until a secret benefactor from her mother’s scandalous past swept into her life. Sent to prestigious boarding school and later to university, Cecelia believed high society was at her fingertips…Then, from out of nowhere, she became the inheritor of a gambling establishment. Now Cecelia must live two lives: one as a proper lady who finds herself undeniably drawn to Lord Ramsay and the other as a savvy gaming hell owner trying to save her business from the very same man. He has no idea she is both women…and Cecelia would like to keep it that way. But what happens when consuming passion and escalating danger threaten to reveal the truth?

My thoughts:

Have I ever mentioned how much I loved Kerrigan Byrne’s writing? She is quickly becoming one of my favourite historical authors.

In this book we’re following the story of Cecelia, who is a gambling parlor owner, and Cassius, who wants to arrest the very same owner since the very beginning not knowing it’s Cecelia behind the mask.

But someone out there threatens Cece’s new secret and the only one who can help is the man who wants nothing to do with gambling…

I love how caring Cassius was even though Cecelia is a temptation to his beliefs. He still took her under her wing and did the same with the child she’s taking care of after the previous owner (her relative) died.

The tension between them is escalating quickly and when it reaches the tipping point… oh my, I won’t spoil that one! 🙂

My only problem with this book and the reason why I’m giving 4 and not 5 stars is that I feel like the heroine had secrets even after the hero shared all of his. It just didn’t feel right, it felt like she was leading him on.

Also, at the end of the book is not exactly known how the hero knew where she was. I wish the author would reveal how he found her.

It’s her choice to play his game. If she says yes, there will be more on the line than just her pleasure.

Zoey Parker has a three-step plan for revenge. First, gain entrance to the ultra-exclusive, upscale sex club, Phoenix. Second, act out her wildest fantasy in front of powerful old rivals, proving that they didn’t break her. Third, disappear and never return. The only kink in her plan? Rhys Harrington, the owner of Phoenix and the one man she needs to stay away from…

Rhys’ high-end clients pay extravagant amounts to watch his stars indulge their desires. Rhys’ only rule? Watch, don’t touch. But one look at Zoey and Rhys decides to participate in the show himself. And when an undeniable passion ignites between them, Rhys knows he wants more. Except Zoey is determined to run… and he is determined to find out why.

When Rhys discovers Zoey’s secret, he shocks her by offering his protection… and a no-strings-attached relationship. But Zoey knows there will be more on the line than just her pleasure. Because Rhys’ sizzling touch doesn’t only capture her body, it also commands her heart.

My thoughts:

It’s been a long time since I read an erotica book.

Zoey has a secret. The only way to get get rid of it is to get an invitation to the exclusive club. She never expects for a club owner to notice her. But notice he did.

Rhys may like kinky stuff but he’s also kind and caring and he immediately takes a liking to Zoey. When he discovers her secret he will do anything to protect her and be there for her.

I love how he didn’t tell her what to do but was supportive enough that she got stronger and healed for her to do the right thing.

My first read by this author and I admit, it got me really curious about the next book – Archer and Elise’s book. From what I’ve seen, it will be hot 😉

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Miss Mariah Wynn was adopted and has spent her life attempting to prove herself worthy. Intelligent and witty, it’s nonetheless not a good idea to let a gentleman know you actually have brains. After all, no one marries the bluestocking, even if she is beautiful and but twenty one.

One man who laughs in the face of bluestockings is Patrick O’Leary, Viscount Donal. He knows the woman’s place, and that is most certainly in the home.

Until, that is, he sees Mariah attending a lecture at his alma mater. A woman—at university. He’s determined she won’t get an education. She’s ready to face down any ignorant man, title or no. A battle of intellect storms while a battle of desire fights under the surface.

Will Mariah and Patrick have enough focus to argue while every bone in their bodies wants to make love?

My thoughts:

When I first read the blurb I fell in love with the book. I love how historical books present education and smart women and feminists and anything related to those three topics. I couldn’t wait to start the book.

Unfortunately, my enthusiasm slowly diminished. I thought the book will be about exchanging wits, maybe even Mariah dressing as a man just to get education. But after one encounter they liked each other immediately. Patrick didn’t like the idea at first but it was insta love between them and then he wasn’t as opposed to the idea of her attending lessons as he first was.

I am disappointed that I didn’t like the book as much as I wanted to. I really thought there would be more heat between them. I liked Mariah and her passion for getting women in Universities, however I didn’t like how easy it all felt. I also felt like some things weren’t explained thoroughly.

Her brother, for example, is a lord but Mariah is not living with him but is actually renting a house. I understand she’s adopted but since they are family I don’t exactly understand why he didn’t offer to live with him and his wife? It’s mentioned she’s adopted. However, one time it is said they like each other but in the other it said they were not on good terms sometimes. Was it because she was adopted? What was the matter with her and his brother? They tolerate eachother and sometimes I had this family vibes between them, other times it’s like they were strangers. I wish author would explain the situation more.

And what kind of hero leaves the heroine after some men harassed her just to return to his party?????

Like I said I like Mariah and what she was doing for women but I also think that at times she was mean. Maybe not on purpose but some words were really hurtful and I hated her for that.

When Hugh Winthrop, the future Earl of Albury, decides to advertise for a wife in the London paper, he never expected an anonymous response from a woman who matches him wit for wit. Their back-and-forth letters on the true nature of love, something they disagree on wholeheartedly, leave him shocked—and intrigued. But then the woman he’s been corresponding with shows up on his doorstep, enticingly beautiful and offering a marriage of convenience in exchange for his protection…

Lady Phoebe Maitland expected to marry for love and nothing else, until the man she gave her trust betrayed her. The more intrigued she becomes by the mysterious and devastatingly handsome Hugh, however, the more she realizes he’s holding back from opening his heart due to long-held secrets she struggles to understand. As passion flares wickedly between them, their marriage bed is quick to heat up. But when Phoebe’s past threatens to destroy the fragile bond they’ve formed, even a budding belief in love might not be enough to save them.

My thoughts:

My first book by this author and I have to say I was pleasantly surprised how much I liked it.

I love heroes who are disadvantaged in some way but manage to make it possible and live their life fully. Hugh is mute so he seeks a wife in a rather unconventional way – by publishing an add in a newspaper. He doesn’t believe in love and wants to marry because that’s what his father wanted for him.

Phoebe isn’t loooking for love either because she was hurt by the worst possible way. She was intrigued by this man but she only wanted to give him her opinion on his add. This turns into some sort of friendship. When she suddenly shows up on his doorstep and offer him marriage, the only thing he is sure about is saying yes to this bold, courageous woman. Their relationship is not meant to become more than mere acquaintances but the more they spent their time together the more their feelings start to grow.

I really love all the sweet scenes and Hugh’s kindness. He was hurt by many people so he’s kind of a recluse but he still knows how to make a woman fall in love with him.

Okay, spoiler alert that I didn’t want to say at first but I can’t write a review without mentioning it briefly: Phoebe is pregnant before she met Hugh. He’s her last chance to give her child the best in the Society. I loved how Hugh accepted her and her condition without hesitation. But what I find missing is that the rest of her pregnancy is rushed in a book. I would love to know more about her time being pregnant but once they get married it’s more about jumping time (”weeks passed”, ”been here for months”). I feel like the author rushed this because she wanted to focus on the time after the baby was born and how they finally got together and were more connected. Even after her child being born, I was hoping for more mother-baby or Hugh-baby time but it ws only mentioned once or twice. The focus was more on their relationship with each other than their time as a new family.

What confused me a little, was the unexpected kidnapping. At first I thought it was a joke because it seemed odd that her brother would order a kidnapping of his own sister. Personally, I think she forgot him too soon because while his intentions were good, he was just too pushy and not understanding. He was thinking of himself. This could be easily avoided with a visit or several letters.

Overall, I really liked this book. I would love to have it on my shelf someday, possibly with some other books by this author 🙂 I would recommend this book to anyone who loves historical romance, heroes with disabilities, scandals and secrets. This hero-being-mute kind of gave me some Archer vibes (Archer’s Vow by Mia Sheridan) and I think readeers who loved that one would like this one as well 🙂

Rating: 4.5 out of 5.

As if it wasn’t bad enough to be deemed the “most single person” at her magazine’s office, budding reporter Penny has now been tapped to write a series of features called “The Dating Game.” From speed dating to Tinder, old-fashioned matchmakers to up-and-coming “dark dating,” Penny now has to go on a lot of dates. Silver lining: meeting new people should be fun, right? But running into her old rival, George, at her first dating event is decidedly not. Not only does the arrogant know-it-all have zero trouble attracting women, wherever Penny goes, somehow he just. Keeps. Showing. Up.

Geo knows he’s right on the cusp of writing success with the chance to have his own syndicated column. All he has to do is follow his agent’s ideas for showcasing different dating avenues, and he’ll pull in enough to help his sister’s non-profit women’s shelter get off the ground. Sure, his itinerary is starting to look strangely similar to his old rival Penny’s, but all’s fair in love and syndication, right?

The more they look for love in all the wrong places, though, the more they start to wonder if it was right in front of their noses all along. Still, the brutal dating scene just might end them, if these two don’t kill each other first.

My thoughts:

When I first read the blurb, I thought ”It’s like How to lose a guy in 10 days but with a twist!” They are both writers but they write the same thing from their own perspective.

I feel like the mystery part of this book is not a mystery at all. They realise pretty soon why they meet each other so often. They start to work together and from enemies goes to sort of friends.

Maybe it’s because I’m used to characters basically jumping each other since the moment they met but this book just didn’t feel interesting. There were stolen kisses that were not acknowledged (they didn’t really talk what this meant for them, they just ignored anything happening between them). The quirky names the side characters had (her sisters were named Dime, Quarter and Nickel with last name Coyne, a matchmaker called Ivana Date) were supposed to make the book funnier but it kind of lost its charm because we never get to know why the four sisters were named that way. I’m sure there could be a lovely, funny story behind it.

There were a lot of scenes that could be better developed. I admit, I didn’t know if the main characters just kissed through the whole book or they slept together too. There’s a hint they might have done it but like I said, it is not mentioned. Through the whole book there are (too) subtle hints of what might have happened. There are words but no actions.

I really liked the whole dating thing and their dates. However, the whole book was just okay for me, a little too clean for me so the story for me is just mediocre.

I thought of giving it three stars but I am not satisfied with this book so I’m giving it a star less. 2 stars because it could be way better developed.
